Family Photo Exhibit Tours Ocean County Libraries
TOMS RIVER - A touring photo-text display created by the award-winning Family Diversity Projects will be displayed at three branches of the Ocean County Library during October.
"In Our Family: Portraits of all Kinds of Families" will be featured in the Toms River, Jackson and Lakewood branches. The exhibit celebrates the diversity of family life in 21st century America with photographs and interviews. It introduces viewers to single-parent families, families living with physical or mental challenges, immigrant families, adoptive families, foster families, divorced families, gay and lesbian-parented families, stepfamilies, multiracial families, multi-generational families and many others in the family circle.
The mission of "In Our Family" is to propel forward a world where all families are recognized, valued and fully supported. When the words "normal" or "different" are not used to describe family and where the right to define family is respectfully restored to individuals.
The exhibit was created to help eliminate prejudice, stereotyping and harassment of people discriminated against due to race, national origin, sexual orientation, religion, gender, class and disability.
As a follow up to the exhibit, the Ocean County Library will be seeking local families who are willing to share their stories for a library sponsored photo exhibit in the spring. More details will be available at the "In Our Family" exhibit.
"In Our Family" is championed by diversity professionals, families, educators, parents, and all people interested in learning more about diversity.
This exhibit is free and open to the public. Information about the event can be found online at www.oceancountylibrary.org or by telephone at 732-349-6200.
